Startwell have both a food and a physical skills tool sheet for settings to use. Both tool sheets presents a variety of skills we would like you to develop with children in your setting and can be used across all of the rooms, from babies to pre-schoolers.
The Physical Skills Tool Sheet has been categorised by the three core fundamental movement skills: locomotor skills, stability skills, and manipulative skills. The sheet outlines progressions and regressions of skills as well as other core skills which are important to develop.
The Food Skills Tool Sheet is divided into cooking skills and eating skills. We would expect the children to develop and progress through these skills.
As you will be aware, not all children develop skills in this order and this document should just be used as a guide by practitioners to help support the development of food and physical skills.
The skills tool sheets can be used in a variety of ways – a few examples are outlined below:
- Have a Skills Sheet for each child and when they have achieved that skill either highlight or tick the skill off
- Pin the Skills Sheet to the board and when an activity has been planned for using that skill either highlight or tick the skill off.
- Alternatively, if an activity has been set up as part of continuous provision to support the development of that skill, the skill again can be highlighted or ticked off the skills sheet
- One skill can be taken from the skills sheet and activities in the setting and at home can be based around that skill for the week
