What types of milk are best?
- For babies under 12 months of age, only breast or formula milk should be given.
- For children aged 12 months or more, semi-skimmed cow’s milk should be provided (see below for the reason for this)
In Birmingham, we recommend that milk supplied to children over the age of 12 months is semi-skimmed, unless a health professional says that the child needs full fat milk. Semi-skimmed milk has the same amount of vitamins and minerals, such as calcium, as full fat milk, but is lower in fat and calories. Children over the age of 12 months do not need these extra fat and calories. As Birmingham has a high percentage of children starting school overweight and obese, it is sensible for Birmingham nurseries to supply semi-skimmed milk to healthy children aged 12 months or above.
