Fundamental Movement Skills Sheets
Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) are the building blocks for developing physical skills. They are often referred to as the basic skills that children need to learn so that they can go on to undertake and master more complex skills. At Startwell we see them as the building blocks to developing and strengthening physical skills. The FMS are split into 3 areas which are Locomotor, Stability, and Manipulation.
Positive health behaviours are established in childhood. Physical development is important as each skill that they learn helps them to become independent and physically literate. Startwell have created the below documents to support you in developing staff’s understanding of FMS and to develop children’s skills. Remember that they are FUNdamental, so make activities exciting, enjoyable and fun!
- Sammy Skills is the Startwell character linked to FMS. Use the Sammy Skills character with the children when they are doing FMS. For more information on Sammy Skills click here.
- The Physical Skills Tool Sheet has been categorised by the three core fundamental movement skills: locomotor skills, stability skills, and manipulative skills. The sheet outlines progressions and regressions of skills as well as other core skills which are important to develop.
- Within our parents section we have activity ideas linked to each of the characters for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers.
